Twee geelkaarte kos Kavaliers duur teen Griekwas

Punte:

Griekwas: Drieë: Jean Stemmet (2), Eugene Butterworth, Marnus Schoeman, Lolo Waka, Jacques Coetzee, Strafdrie. Doelskoppe: Marnitz Boshoff, Rudi Vogt (2). Strafdoel: Boshoff.

Boland: Drieë: Neil Papier, Thor Halvorsen. Doelskoppe: Ricardo Croy (2). Strafdoele: Croy (2).

Sharks Ravage Boland

The Sharks hosted the Boland Kavaliers at Mr Price KINGS PARK on Friday evening in their first pre-season warm-up match ahead of the upcoming Vodacom Super Rugby tournament with the players enjoying a productive hit-out.

Boland, in their fashionably ‘pink and proud’ outfits certainly didn’t come to Durban to make up the numbers and gave The Sharks a good measure of opposition.

However, once The Sharks got into their stride, there was no stopping them and while the determination from Boland never waivered, it was clear that they were outclassed by a superior attacking side.

This match presented a decent opportunity for testing combinations and getting valuable game time in a competitive environment.

Certainly the pairing of Freddie Michalak and Pat Lambie worked a treat with the Frenchman providing crisp, accurate service to his flyhalf and taking the odd gap when it was offered.

It took The Sharks a bit of time to get reward, but two tries within a few minutes took them into a 14-nil lead and was good reward for some patient play mixed with the energetic.

There was some great interplay between the backs resulting in the team’s third try, scored by JP Pietersen off an attack that started on the half-way line. And to add further to the visitors’ woes when they were 21-nil down, their centre, Siviwe Magaba was sent from the field and directly to an early shower as referee Craig Joubert showed little sympathy for his spear tackle on Keegan Daniel that looked particularly dangerous and which resulted in a red card.

Bismarck du Plessis came close once more when, for the third time, he was held up over the tryline in the last act of the first half with The Sharks holding a deserved 21-0 lead.

The Sharks started the second half with a number of changes to personnel with S~snglQuote~Bura Sithole managing to score with his first touch of the ball in the opening five minutes. The action continued and the tries continued to come as Lwazi Mvovo and then Marcell Coetzee added further scores and The Sharks hit 40 points, and importantly, had not allowed Boland to come near their tryline, or certainly had contained the best efforts from the visitors.

The game opened up in the closing 20 minutes of the game as The Sharks hit the half-century and then some, and it was clear that they were really enjoying themselves out there.

The Sharks appear to have finished the game pretty much unscathed as far as injuries go and with the game time afforded the players and the opportunity for the coaching staff to assess their depth.

Ten tries later and there was plenty to enthuse about although with an exciting season lying ahead.

Scorers:

The Sharks: 62 (21) Tries: Riaan Viljoen, Bismarck du Plessis, JP Pietersen, S~snglQuote~Bura Sithole, Lwazi Mvovo, Marcell Coetzee (2), Paul Jordaan, Lubabalo Mtembu (2).
Conversions: Pat Lambie (4), Meyer Bosman (2)

Boland: (0)

Stormers beat Boland in friendly

Stormers beat Boland in friendly

Posted on Sat 21st January 2012

The Stormers wrapped up their first 2012 Super Rugby warm-up match with a pleasing 45-14 win over neighbours Boland Cavaliers in the sweltering heat at a packed Boland Stadium, Wellington on Saturday.

Sound cover defence by Boland held out a possible first-minute try by the Stormers but a rolling maul two minutes later close to the tryline provided a platform for tighthead Frans Malherbe to score.

Flyhalf Burton Francis, the former Bulls and Lions pivot, converted to give the Stormers a 7-0 lead.

Stormers halfback Bolla Conradie was in fine nick at the base of the scrum and after he sniped through the Boland defence for his try he set up a raid which led to a penalty try for the Stormers, with Francis converting both attempts for a 21-0 lead after 17

minutes of play.

Boland staged a gallant fightback which saw them take play up to the Stormers four times in a 16-minute passage of play. However, Boland could not finish to claim reward for their efforts.

Four minutes ahead of the break, the Stormers sprung a counter-attack from deep and following superb handling as they swept downfield, right wing Danie Poolman scored a converted try (28-0).

Boland managed to keep the ball alive after the half-time hooter sounded and finally cracked the Stormers defence as centre Jonathan Francke crashed over, with flyhalf Ricardo Croy converting to take the first-half score to 28-7.

The hosts started the second half with the same fervour as they displayed in the closing stages with a second try in the 47th minute when eighthman and captain Junior Bester dotted down and Croy adding the conversion (28-14).

The Stormers made their first second-half foray into the Boland 22m area with a try by Rohan Kitshoff.

Substitute flyhalf Kurt Coleman hashed his conversion attempt (33-14).

As both teams made wholesale substitutions the game lost a great deal of momentum in the final 20 minutes as the replacements battled to strike cohesion.

The Stormers, however, were mostly in control in the final stages with eighthman Nizaam Carr crashing over in the 67th minute with Coleman goaled for a 40-14 lead.

Towards the end the Stormers upped the tempo as their game flourished with several late hand-to-hand sorties, one of which resulted in an unconverted try by replacement hooker Tiaan Liebenberg in the final minute.

Scorers: Boland Cavaliers: Tries: Jonathan Francke and Junior Bester.

Conversions: Ricardo Croy (2).

Stormers: Tries: Frans Malherbe, Bolla Conradie, penalty try, Danie Poolman, Rohan Kitshoff, Nizaam Carr and Tiaan Liebenberg. Conversions: Burton Francis (4) and Kurt Coleman. – Sapa
